New ACAS Bereavement guide #HR #ACAS #Management

ACAS has a new good practice guide on managing bereavement in the workplace. Note that there is no statutory right to bereavement leave – only the right, under the existing time off for dependant provisions, to take a “reasonable” period of unpaid leave to deal with the practical and immediate issues arising from the death of a dependant. ACAS recommends having a clear written policy and providing an entitlement to a defined period of paid leave in the event of the death of close family members. The guide also covers what to do when notified of a bereavement, communicating with affected employees, and allowing employees to indicate what contact they want and their preferences.
